Patriotism & Racism: a silly sonnet

My first attempt at writing a sonnet, I can’t say I love it because I would never speak like this:

Old Albany is home to the romance
Of patriotism and racism
Which stand hand in hand yet unembarrassed
Of minds turned afraid of mass migration

It was sixty-eight when Powell charmed the snake
The genteel, perverse nationalist hand
Walking its fingers across our napes
In search of apples foreign to this land

Colonialism has long been taboo
yet the patriot still celebrated
No one should stop flying red white and blue
Just sip to Bacchus if agitated

With pride hold your glasses to your flagpole
and drink to your gut’s delight, you sorry souls
